Then with barbed wire wrapped around his neck and tied to a large fan, his body was discarded into the Tallahatchi River. What was young Emmettââ¬â¢s offense that brought on this heinous reaction of two grown white men? When he went into a store to buy some bubble gum he allegedly whistled at a white female store clerk, who happened to be the store ownerââ¬â¢s wife. That is the story of the end of Emmett Tillââ¬â¢s life. Lynchings, beatings and cross-burning had been happening in the United States for years. But it was not until this young boy suffered an appalling murder in Mississippi that the eyes of a nation were irrevocably opened to the ongoing horrors of racism inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Sharpton summarizes her decision, ââ¬Å"She found the strength to say, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ll bear my pain to save some other mother from having to go through thisââ¬â¢. And because she put the pict ure of this young manââ¬â¢s body on the conscious of America she might have saved thousands of young black men and womenââ¬â¢s lives.â⬠The Reverend goes on to say that through the media coverage of the funeral, ââ¬Å"She was able to graphically bring home what a thousand speeches could notâ⬠therefore forcing America face itââ¬â¢s problem of racism. Managing Diversity Equality In Workplace -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Managing Diversity Equality In Workplace? Answer: Introducation Cross-cultural communication or CCC is a business issue considering the globalisation and advancement in technology. To make a business global, one needs to work with diverse workforce. It implies strong understanding of culturally diverse people communicate, speak or perceive the world around them. Lack of awareness of different business and communication strategies, customs and beliefs hinders the business dealings. CCC is affected by the power distance, high-context vs. low-context cultures, language differences. It is business issue as it may lead to trust issues and affect the interpersonal relationship with subordinates. Ethical issues may arise if each others culture, values and norms are not respected. For instance, the American workers may point finger during non-verbal communication. It is considered rude in other cultures. This may lead to miscommunications and act as barrier to express the product or service ideas (Padhi, 2018). CCC is an ethics issue as it is difficult to communicate effectively in the global environment. Ethical and cultural differences can lead to miscommunication. For instance, exchanging gifts is respectful for business in some countries but in other countries it may be considered bribery. It may be offending to adopt another culture, or compromise on personal cultural identity for some people. Ethical issues arise when individual worth and dignity is not maintained in culturally diverse workplace. Failure to prefer commonality and universality instead of separateness leads to ethical dilemmas. Further, it may be difficult for mangers to comprehend how to behave, due to differences in cultural traditions, history, and level of development (Trevino Nelson, 2016). Understanding of ethics will help people to treat the culturally diverse people with same respect and dignity, they expect for themselves. Understanding of CCC can help the professionals to act emphatically and try to deal with other culture as accurately as possible. Professional can be more tolerant, that is encouraging culturally diverse people to express their ideas and views and strive to identify with other peoples cultures (Padhi, 2018). Understanding of ethics in CCC will assist the managers to balance the ethical imperialism and cultural relativism during ethical dilemmas. They will respect other people human dignity, human rights, and traditions (Demuijnck, 2015). The author intends to explain that effective communication can lead to strong organisational performance. Effective communication is necessary to overcome misunderstandings due to cultural and ethical differences. An organisation can gain competitive advantage by learning the in pact of the globalisation on the cross cultural communication. Effective communication is the internal strength of any operations as per the author. It will allow the employees to share their ideas and innovative strategies (Padhi, 2018). Effective communication is the medium to transfer knowledge. Hence, the author emphasise on developing internal communication capacity to overcome the economic challenges and external threats. To work towards common organisational goals and objectives, the employees must be aware of the products and services of the company and its difference with the competitors. Only through CCC, can a business devote more time and resources for gaining competitive advantage. Without intern al communication capacity, a chaos may arise that will hinder the process of tackling the external threats (Kaul, 2014). It means culturally proficiency do not ask for merely accepting the cultural differences. Instead it emphasise on having skills, attitudes, beliefs and knowledge that allows one to support and respond effectively in cross-cultural setting. It is the skill of an individual to respond effectively to people who differ from them (John Roberts, 2017). It implies for the mangers to understand how and when to speak to employees from different cultures to meet the organisational objectives. It will allow building value for the stakeholders (Lindsey Lindsey, 2016). It means the focus should be on a transformational process. Cultural proficiency as per author means to acknowledge the interdependence in workforce align with the group other than their own. The author intends to emphasise on ability to create environment that welcomes and values the culturally diverse individuals, to infuse multicultural perspective in implementing particular business strategy. It means eliminating the culture of stereotyping (Padhi, 2018). Respecting individual differences is beneficial in workplace both for employers and associates. It is an effective way to maintain workplace diversity and equality. It will increase workplace productivity and competitive advantage. The other advantages include improvement in marketing opportunities, creativity, recruitment, and business image (Sharma, 2016). As each individual is unique, the managers must understand the consequences of discrimination. It is different from promotion of cultural adaptation in workplace. Cultural adaptation may only lead to adjusting to different culturally dissimilar backgrounds. However, this may involve ethical issues, due to cultural shock during adjustment stage (Croucher et al., 2017). To create innovation one need to infuse multicultural perspective, for which it is mandatory to consider individual opinions and respect the same (Petrakis et al., 2015). It may not be effective to use same leadership style for all people. With different people in t he organisation, the need to be in contact with different people also varies. Cultural adaption may only lead to memorising the cultural nuance of every market. It may not promote active listening and respecting others perspectives and ideas (Padhi, 2018). The author explains that effective cross cultural communication does not need to spend excess time in strengthening the internal communication capacity. These companies are successful in overcoming the external communication issues. Therefore, these companies gain competitive advantage. These companies where employees have undergone intercultural training have better awareness of the cultural nuances. These employees demonstrate understanding of how culture may impact communication with customers and clients. The employees demonstrate effective communication style, appreciation of seniority, meeting and greeting skills of different cultures, meeting etiquette, and strong negotiation tactics (Deardorff, 2017). Thus, the companies successfully communicating cross-culturally have a competitive advantage. It means that intercultural training fosters productivity and proficiency. These companies are successful as they are able to overcome misunderstandings due to prejudices and personal b ases. Thus, an organisation can effectively meet the objectives. Stereotyping may prove to be hindrance in the workplace in regards to communication. Stereotyping is the development of the assumptions regarding other members in the group. Such prejudices can lead to miscommunication. Overemphasising the cultural differences leads to misunderstandings of gestures even though positive. Every culture has a protocol to identify an appropriate behaviour. For instance, if Americans are perceived to be aggressive and intolerant, it may not hold true for all the Americans. Taken for granted beliefs can affect the personal attitudes and expectations when communicating with people from different culture (Padhi, 2018). Overemphasising the individual differences may hinder the managements ability to use the employees skills to their full potential. It may affect the decision-making skills of the management. Employees may feel deprived of opportunities. It may decrease their morale and productivity (Korez Vide, Jure, 2016). It implies that the organisations m ust take cognizance of the differences. At the same time there should be a unity in diversity. Stereotyping in many companies have led to high turnover rate, poor performance and high rate of absenteeism. Consequently, it may affect the companys revenues due to dissatisfied customers. A firm may lose competitive advantage due to lack of open communication culture. It leads to failure implementing the diverse employee perspectives. It acts as barrier to creativity, innovation, problem solving and competitive abilities (Tr?pczy?ski et al., 2016). Chinese Women Essays (2317 words) - Chinese Women, Gender Studies
Chinese Women China, located in East Asia, is the third largest country by area and the largest country by population in the world. While China has one-fifth of the worlds total population, and it also has one of the earliest civilizations, dating back to some 5000 years ago. China is often distinguished for its technological advances and intelligence, but in the early 20th century, Chinese society was far from perfect. The women in China, lived a slow and difficult life, bound by tradition and obedience. Women had to bind their feet at birth or face adversity throughout their entire lives. Footbinding was a painful process that allowed women to be thought of as beautiful and a good future wife. However, their roles in society soon changed, with the invading Communism. Women soon received the same treatment and the respect Chinese men had because of Western ideas and influence. Chinese women suffered pain and heartache their entire lives. From the moment a woman was born, she was considered nothing, she was unimportant.1 Sons were all that mattered because the family name would live in them, while a daughter would be married off and take on the duties for their in-laws. A woman earned little respect from her family. For example, when a son born was born, the umbilical cord was saved in a jar. However, if a daughter was born, her umbilical cord was buried outside because she left and married off when coming to age and there was no need to save the umbilical cord of a guest.2 They were mostly uneducated and played out the role of a servant or slave. They did everything: they washed, knitted, and were required to serve our marital duties.3 In dealing with the challenges that women faced, one primary fact becomes apparent- a woman rarely had a free day without chores or problems. Unborn while inside the womb, a girl baby faced the possibility of being aborted because there was no time, or money, to care for her.4 Each day she lived she was forced to complete so many chores that she became tired out when the day was over. Along with basic necessities such as bathing and eating a women served their families, cooked all the meals, cleaned all by themselves, and then worked the humid fields.5 It was nearly impossible for women to leave the family and make something out of themselves because they had very little education. They were required to leave when the boys were studying or asked to copy some words out of a book, when the tutor was free.6 Although they were given some money for groceries and other supplies, women could not spend cash freely, without a mans permission.7 In addition, when their husbands brought home a concubine, a mistress or prostitute, there was no scene of jealously, unacceptance, or animosity. If these feelings were displayed, the women were shamed and this was a way for the male to request for a divorce.8 Death, a time for release and independence, was not such a time for women. There were two worlds. The Shadow World was female, with a negative essence, and all things motionless and deep. The Light World was male, with a positive essence, with all things strong and high. Women still endured agony while a man had nothing but happiness.9 Constrained by tradition and the family, a women complied to the rules of filial piety. They accepted that their lives and bodies were not their own, but gifts from their parents.10 Women were not loose or casual, but very closed and formal. Thus, women informed their parents where they were going, what they were doing, and needed permission on important life decisions.11 Simply, they were restricted in every way possible. If women were ignorant that was their virtue; they were more obedient to their in-laws.12 In childhood, the father was in control. They never entered the fathers vicinity unless asked and never left it without his consent. Girls spoke when they were spoken to, had to anticipate their fathers wishes, and when scolded, they thanked him for his corrections.13 Moreover, love was not a deciding factor, in marriage. The women were promised to other families by their parents or masters, and could not object.14 The in-laws and husband were in power after a women wed. Distant behavior and respect and love for the in-laws, were a must. The relationship with the in-laws was more important than the one with the husband.15 Motherhood was where the in-laws

7 Classes and Types of Phrases
7 Classes and Types of Phrases 7 Classes and Types of Phrases 7 Classes and Types of Phrases By Mark Nichol Phrase is such a banal term for two or more words that convey an idea that it may surprise you that there are seven types of phrases, with variations. Here, with pertinent phrases in sample sentences formatted in boldface, is a rundown of the categories: 1. Absolute Phrase An absolute phrase is a modifying parenthetical or subordinate phrase of a root sentence that includes a subject but does not have an acting verb so cannot stand on its own as sentence: ââ¬Å"Their effort to regain the lead successful, the team continued to score until they pulled ahead by a wide margin. 2. Appositive Phrase An appositive phrase is one that restates a preceding term, or expands or explains it, in a parenthetical statement. There are three variations of appositive phrases: ââ¬Å"Her dog, a bull mastiff, looks ridiculous with a pink bow stuck to her headâ⬠features a noun phrase. ââ¬Å"His favorite hobby, knitting, is rather unusual for a manâ⬠includes a gerund phrase. ââ¬Å"The Tahitianââ¬â¢s ambition, to become an ice skater, is unexpectedâ⬠has an infinitive phrase. Note that these three types of phrases are explained below; the distinction in the phrase types as applied above, as opposed to the types described below, is that each type serves as the basis for an appositive phrase; on their own, they need not be appositive, or set off. 3. Gerund Phrase A gerund phrase includes a verbal, a hybrid that functions as a noun (or adjective). There are three distinct functions: ââ¬Å"Juggling knives is not recommended as a relaxation techniqueâ⬠includes a gerund phase as the subject of the sentence. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going for a long walk off a short pierâ⬠features a gerund phrase as the sentenceââ¬â¢s object. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s saving up for a vacation in Antarcticaâ⬠has a gerund phrase as the object of a preposition. 4. Infinitive Phrase An infinitive phrase includes the word to and a verb as the basis of a modification of a root sentence: ââ¬Å"His effort to pass the bill doomed his political ambitionsâ⬠includes an infinitive phrase that functions as an adjective modifying the previous noun. ââ¬Å"He plans to see the movieâ⬠features an infinitive phrase that functions as the sentenceââ¬â¢s object. ââ¬Å"To write of the experience is to dredge up unpleasant memoriesâ⬠has an infinitive phrase that functions as the sentenceââ¬â¢s subject. ââ¬Å"To say as much is to admit guiltâ⬠includes an infinitive phrase that serves as predicate nominative, or a substitute subject. ââ¬Å"I went to the store to buy some ice creamâ⬠features an infinitive phrase that stands as an adverb (modifying the verb went). 5. Noun Phrase A noun phrase consists of a person, place, or thing and any modifiers: ââ¬Å"This is a grammar lesson.â⬠It may include one or more adjectives (as grammar modifies lesson here). It might include a noun and a modifying clause: ââ¬Å"This is a lesson that explains the various types of phrases.â⬠It might take the form of one of three other types of phrase: infinitive, participial, and prepositional. (The infinitive phrase is discussed above, and the latter two types are described below.) Many noun phrases are continuous; they consist of words in sequence. However, a noun phrase may be discontinuous, meaning that it is broken up into more than one element: ââ¬Å"This lesson is one that explains the various types of phrases.â⬠6. Participial Phrase A participial phrase consists of verbals ending in -ing or -ed, or another irregular form of a verb, and serves as an adjective: The participial phrase in ââ¬Å"Having been lied to before, I was waryâ⬠modifies the word I. The phrase may be parenthetical within a sentence, too: In ââ¬Å"You, knowing what you now know, are in a better position to judge,â⬠the participial phrase modifies the word you. 7. Prepositional Phrase A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and a noun or pronoun that serves as the prepositionââ¬â¢s object, and often one or more adjectives: ââ¬Å"I went for a walk in the dark woods.â⬠Prepositional phrases are often located at the head of a sentence. ââ¬Å"When the sun went down, I hurried back.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Gussing the Fiscal Cliff's Fate Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Gussing the Fiscal Cliff's Fate - Article Example As stated by the then presidential candidates, the White House, Federal Reserve Chairman and Congress Members, the event of going over the cliff would have been destructive and irresponsible. This paper will give a brief of the guessing of the fate of the fiscal cliff. The guessing of the fiscal cliffââ¬â¢s fate was centered on who between the two presidential candidates would make it to the Office. Questions were rife whether the Congress would push the financial system over the economic cliff. The functionality of Washington was questioned in light of speculation that the president to be elected, and the Congress would allow taxes to shoot up and government spending to be reduced, all with the risk of a renewed recession. It will be remembered that, in August 2011, it was agreed between President Obama and the Congress that annual federal spending would be reduced by $900 billion spread over a 10 year period (Wall, 2012). That was approximately a 33 percent cut of the total fede ral budget. In a bid to accomplish more, President Obama signed into law a bill passed by the Congress that required spending cuts in all sectors from 31st December 2012. That was unless an agreement was reached on an amalgamation of tax increases and benefit cuts that would save another $1.2 trillion in 10 years. It was gambled on Wall Street that the Congress would get a way out of the quagmire after the election by making an arrears deal or calling off the whole thing. Some Democrats ironically argued that if the nation went over the fiscal cliff, it would give them a better chance to negotiate with the Republicans, come 2013. Some Republicans, too, had the same opinion. However, it was difficult at that time to differentiate between genuine convictions and bargaining rants (Wall, 2012). Those who believed that Mitt Romney would win the elections also believed that Congress would suspend the whole issue up to mid-2013 in order to allow him time to design a budget. On the other ha nd, President Obamaââ¬â¢s supporters believed that if he won, the dynamics would depend on whether the victory was strong enough or by a trivial margin. Further, the fate would also be determined by the number of Senate seats won or lost by Republicans in the House. As presidential elections drew nearer, polls indicated that incumbent President Obama would retain his seat, and the Congress would remain much as it was. In that case, sympathetic senators and administration optimists from both parties foresaw a situation where the president would offer a new plan that would curb increases in benefits, especially Medicare, than the previous proposals. Bipartisan negotiations would also be seen, in which instant down payment, albeit small, would be availed towards reduction of the federal deficit on items that enjoyed bipartisan support. From the negotiations, instructions would be issued to appropriate congressional committees requiring them to sketch tax reform laws (Wall, 2012). Th e draft laws would be expected to raise revenue amounts decided upon and also find another amount agreed on for savings from benefit agendas within 2013 through procedures that require 51 senate votes for approval. Finally, the negotiations were expected to offer a contingency plan that both the president and Congress could live with, not like the previous one. The plan was expected to materialize from among the several bipartisan anti-deficit strategies proposed. However, all the assumption was
